As per reports, a fire broke out at a school in Bukavu, South Kivu, at around 1000 hours local time (0800 hours UTC) on Thursday (10 September), triggering a stampede among students attempting to evacuate the building.
• Reports indicate that at least 17 casualties, including children, have been reported, while more than 50 students were admitted to hospitals.
• The reported death toll remains provisional and may increase as authorities assess the incident.
• Reportedly, the fire also destroyed hundreds of houses in the surrounding area, while its cause remains unknown.
• Firefighting operations had reportedly contained the fire by the afternoon, although smoke continued to rise from the affected area.
