As per reports, the Head of the Veterinary Medical Professions Syndicate in Marj, Libya, on Wednesday (08 July) warned livestock breeders about the rapid spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and its potential impact on animal health and livestock production.
• Reports indicate the virus may spread through airborne transmission over long distances, direct contact with infected animals, and contaminated equipment, vehicles and people moving between livestock enclosures.
• According to veterinary officials, adult livestock are expected to experience reduced milk production, miscarriage, lameness and weight loss, while mortality among newborn lambs and calves may reach 50 to 70 percent due to heart muscle complications associated with the disease.
