As per reports, a public demonstration took place in Loosdrecht, where approximately 500 individuals gathered near the town hall to oppose the planned establishment of an asylum seeker accommodation facility on Monday (20 April).
• The protest was reportedly directed against a municipal decision by Municipality of Wijdemeren to use the largely vacant town hall building at Rading one to house up to 110 asylum seekers, primarily single men.
• The demonstration, which took place between approximately 1945 hours local time (1745 hours UTC) and 2200 hours local time (2000 hours UTC), began in a peaceful manner but gradually escalated. Protesters expressed concerns about lack of public consultation, safety, nuisance, and the duration of the proposed accommodation.
• During the escalation, some participants threw eggs and fireworks at police personnel, prompting authorities to clear the area around the town hall. Riot police, including mobile units, were deployed to manage the situation. No arrests were reported; however, police have initiated an investigation into potential offenses.
• Authorities indicated that demonstrations are generally facilitated, with operational decisions taken by the municipality. The event occurred amid broader local unrest and political discussion, including a petition against the plan and questions raised in Hilversum regarding implications of the upcoming municipal merger.
