As per reports, Moroccan security forces intercepted 294 people attempting to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Fnideq, also known as Castillejos, in northern Morocco on Saturday (15 August), following social media calls for another mass border crossing.
• The updated total comprised 248 nationals from sub Saharan African countries and 46 Moroccan nationals.
• Moroccan authorities maintained a reinforced security deployment involving checkpoints, surveillance drones, riot police and water cannons, while groups attempting to move towards the frontier were dispersed before reaching the Ceuta border.
• No mass breach into Ceuta was reported, and the border remained under heightened security following the attempted mobilisation.
• Authorities also established road checkpoints and prevented some people from travelling towards northern Morocco from cities including Casablanca, Fez and Kenitra.
• Security was simultaneously reinforced on the Spanish side. Spain deployed more than 500 additional police officers from mainland Spain, increasing the total security presence in Ceuta to more than 1,600 personnel.
