Situational update on ATM explosion reported in Amsterdam on Thursday (07 May)

As per reports, an ATM explosion was reported on Jan Pieter Heijestraat near Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam at approximately 0340 hours local time (0140 hours UTC) on Thursday (07 May).

According to Dutch police, two explosions targeted an ATM located inside the Bestseller book and tobacco shop situated on the corner of Jan Pieter Heijestraat and Kinkerstraat in Amsterdam-West.

• The blasts caused extensive structural damage to the retail premises, including a large hole in the building façade.
• Witnesses reported hearing two loud explosions before observing two suspects dressed in black fleeing the area on a scooter toward the Overtoom area.
• Police subsequently cordoned off the scene and launched an investigation involving forensic teams, the Explosives Safety Team Leader (TEV), and criminal investigators.
• Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported and residents living in apartments above the affected retail premises were not evacuated. It remains unclear whether cash or other items were stolen during the incident.
• Nearby businesses, including adjacent commercial premises, reported temporary operational disruption and customer appointment cancellations following the explosion. Residents in the surrounding area also reported disturbance and concern due to the intensity of the blasts.
