Severe weather warnings issued across New Zealand’s Northern Island on Friday and Saturday (11-12 July) amid heavy rainfall

The MetService has issued several severe weather warnings for rainfall and strong winds in parts of New Zealand from Friday to Saturday (11-12 July). The following are the details:

• Till 0200 hours of Saturday (12 July): An orange heavy rain warning issued for Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula and Waikato. During this period, expect 90 to 110 mm of rain at peak rates of 20 to 30 mm/h in the evening. There is a low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
• Till 2359 hours on Friday (11 July): An orange heavy rain warning issued for Taranaki Maunga. During this period, expect 120 to 150 mm of rain at peak rates of 20 to 30 mm/h in the evening. It is to be noted that this is an upgrade from a Watch to an Orange warning only for the Maunga. There is a low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
• Till 0100 hours on Saturday (12 July): An red heavy rain warning issued for Tasman and Nelson districts about and southeast of Motueka and north of Lake Rotoroa. Expect over 100 mm of rain at peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/h through afternoon and evening. The warning for the district was upgraded from an orange warning issued prior.
• Till 2200 hours on Friday (11 July): An orange heavy rain warning issued for Northland and Auckland including Great Barrier Island. Expect 60 to 90 mm of rain with peak rates of 20 to 30 mm/h expected in the evening. There is a low chance of upgrading to a Red Warning. Auckland City Councillor Richard Hills has warned that the heaviest rainfall is expected between 1800-2000 hours, coinciding with rush hour traffic.
• Network Tasman has warned of power outages in Golden Bay, Motueka and other areas. It further stated that power supply disruptions may persist due to unsafe weather conditions for repair crews to operate.
• The State Highway-1 (SH1) has been closed through the Mangamuka Gorge due to a landslide on Friday (11 July), as per the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA); vehicles will be redirected via SH10. Additionally, the following highways have been shut – SH6 Rocks Road, Nelson, between Bisley Avenue and Richardson Street; SH6 from Kawatiri to Brightwater; SH60 from Richmond to Collingwood; and • SH63 Renwick to St Arnaud, between Waihopai Valley Road and Korere Tophouse Road. • The Northland Civil Defence has stated that many Northern and Eastern areas of the region had received more than 50mm of rainfall between Thursday and Friday (10-11 July). Due to this, many rivers are flowing close to the flood-level.
