Road closure announced on SH5 between Tirau and Rotorua on Monday (01 December)

As per reports, State Highway 5 (SH5) between Tirau and Rotorua has been closed on Monday (01 December) due to a serious crash. The closure is in effect between the intersection of SH28 and SH5 and the intersection of SH5 and Maraeroa Road.

A detour has been established via SH28, SH29 and SH36, with expected delays of approximately 40 to 60 minutes (m). Trucks and heavy vehicles travelling north between Rotorua and Tīrau are unable to pass the intersection of Harwoods Road and SH5 due to current restrictions. A diversion for heavy vehicles has been put in place, and drivers are required to follow directions from emergency services personnel. Further updates regarding reopening timelines are expected as emergency response operations progress.
