As per reports, authorities in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, have declared a 500-metre restricted zone around the St Peter & Paul Sea Food Exports Pvt. Ltd. facility in Kannigaipair ahead of a scheduled controlled ammonia gas removal operation on Saturday-Sunday (04-05 July).
Precautionary evacuations and traffic diversions have been announced to ensure public safety during the operation.
• As a precautionary measure, residents, workers, shopkeepers, and occupants within a 300-metre radius are being evacuated by 1800 hours on Friday (03 July) to safer locations.
• Traffic movement on nearby roads, including sections of NH 716, will be diverted during Saturday-Sunday (04-05 July) to avoid exposure to the restricted zone.
• The operation will be conducted by a multi-agency technical team, including the police, revenue department, fire and rescue services, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), health department, and industrial safety authorities.
• A control room has been established at the Kannigaipair revenue inspector’s office, with emergency contact support provided for the public.
• Authorities have advised residents to remain calm in case of any ammonia leak risk and follow safety measures such as moving upwind, covering nose and mouth with a wet cloth, and avoiding exposure zones.
