As per reports, the Verdi union has called for a warning strike across Berlin’s public sector on 18 December, with work stoppages expected to begin in the morning.
• Verdi is demanding a seven percent monthly pay increase, with a minimum raise of EUR 300 to support lower wage groups, as part of nationwide negotiations for state employees (excluding Hesse). The union is seeking a twelve-month contract, arguing that recent price increases have created a backlog of unmet wage demands.
• Verdi, together with the GEW (Education), GdP (Police), and IG BAU (Construction, Agriculture) unions, has also called for a major rally in front of the Berlin House of Representatives on 18 December, timed to coincide with the state parliament’s vote on the Berlin budget, which includes significant cuts to the state’s social infrastructure.
• Altogether, approximately 187,000 public sector employees in Berlin’s state administrations, districts, universities, municipal daycare centers and theatres, including 63,000 civil servants, are potentially affected. The warning strike and coordinated rally are expected to cause considerable disruption across public services and city operations.
