As per reports, the UK and the EU have signed a historic international treaty in Brussels to deliver definitive economic, trade, and border certainty for Gibraltar on Tuesday (14 July).

• The accord was signed by UK Minister of State Stephen Doughty and EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, alongside Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares Bueno and Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, following unanimous endorsement by the Gibraltar Parliament.
• The Council of the European Union has authorized the provisional application of the comprehensive treaty framework starting from Wednesday (15 July), ensuring its immediate implementation while final legal translations, European Parliament consent, and formal state ratifications are completed.
• The agreement establishes a tailored border control system that eliminates all routine physical checks and immigration barriers at the land frontier between Spain and Gibraltar.
• Under the new framework, Gibraltar will align with EU Schengen zone boundary rules and establish a bespoke customs union. All routine border, passport, and biometric verification checks will be relocated away from the land barrier to Gibraltar’s airport and maritime port entry points.
• Non-EU and non-Gibraltarian travelers arriving by air are expected to undergo dual checks administered by Gibraltar authorities and Spanish border police operating at a joint facility.
• The agreement explicitly guarantees the “double lock” on British sovereignty, ensuring the completely autonomous operation and movement of UK military assets and personnel within the territory.
