As per reports, on Monday (26 October), the British Medical Association (BMA) announced that hospital consultants in England plan to strike on Wednesday (25 November) and Thursday (26 November) over pay, working hours, and workload. The announcement follows more than 18 months of negotiations without an agreement on key demands, including measures to address burnout and the decline in real-term pay.
The government has indicated that negotiations have been constructive and described the planned action as disappointing. The BMA stated that the strike could be avoided if the Health Secretary commits to formal negotiations. Emergency medical cover is expected to continue during the walkout, while non-urgent outpatient appointments, elective surgeries and follow-up appointments are expected to be postponed or rescheduled.
