As per reports, on Wednesday (15 October), several protesters gathered outside the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC, as justices heard oral arguments in a case involving Louisiana electoral districts and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA).
• Activists warned that the case may weaken a key provision of the 1965 law, potentially stripping minority populations of fair representation.
• Protesters carried signs reading ‘Black voters matter,’ ‘Build Black political power,’ and ‘Protect our vote,’ and participated in chants and songs emphasizing civil rights and voting justice.
• Congressional members, including Rep. Troy Carter, warned that striking down Section 2 could eliminate majority-Black congressional districts in Louisiana, further disenfranchising minority communities.
• During nearly two-and-a-half hours of oral arguments, conservative justices signalled their intent to weaken a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, although they may not eliminate it entirely.
