Prohibitory orders issued till Wednesday (28 August) in Tripura’s Ranibazar District after communal unrest

As per reports, authorities have issued restrictions on public movement and gatherings under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The assembly of five or more people has been prohibited in the Jirania sub-division of the Ranibazar District till 0100 hours of Wednesday (28 August). An official notice is awaited.

• The orders have been issued after at least 16 houses and several vehicles were set on fire by unidentified miscreants in the Durganagar and Kaitoirabari villages in the Jirania Sub-division, after an idol was found defaced at a nearby temple on Sunday (25 August). The site of the incident was approximately 10 kilometres from the state capital of Agartala.
• Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator and minister Sushanta Chowdhury, as well as senior police officials visited the site of the violence on Monday (26 August) morning to take stock of the situation.
