As per reports, a new, rapidly intensifying “bomb cyclone” (designated Winter Storm Gianna) is impacting Upstate South Carolina on Saturday (31 January) and Sunday (01 February) – reportedly causing power outages across the region on the latter day.

• Communities in Greenville, Spartanburg, York, and Chester counties received several inches of snow. Snowfall totals reached 5-6 inches around Greenville, with localised heavier bands dropping significantly more in mountainous and border areas.
• Scattered power outages affected thousands in the Upstate. Significant clusters were reported in Greenville and Spartanburg, with utilities such as Duke Energy and Blue Ridge Electric working to restore service.
• The combination of recent ice damage and new snow has weakened the canopy, leading to limbs falling on lines. Over 30,000 customers are without power statewide at the storm’s peak, with Greenville accounting for at least 5,000 of those.
