As per reports, representatives of Honduras heavy cargo transport sector are scheduled to meet with government officials on Wednesday (09 September) to address concerns over rising fuel and operating costs and transport rates that have reportedly remained unchanged for approximately 15 years. The sector has maintained a strike warning, stating that failure to reach an agreement could result in a stoppage of cargo and fuel transportation nationwide. Transport representatives have warned that approximately 2500 heavy freight units could be taken out of operation.
Potential strike follows partial transport blockades on key logistics routes, including the road towards Puerto Cortes on Monday (07 September), where one lane remained open and significant congestion was reported. Transporters have also previously blocked the Pan-American Highway near the port of San Lorenzo, Valle. The latest escalation follows a fuel price increase effective Monday (07 September), with diesel rising to L145.69 per gallon in Tegucigalpa and L141.58 in San Pedro Sula.
