As per reports, Costa Rica will implement a nationwide points-based driver’s license system starting from January 2026 aimed at enhancing road safety through cumulative sanctions.
• Each driver will begin with an initial score that decreases with each traffic violation, and upon exhausting points, the driver’s license will be suspended.
• This decision was confirmed at the recent Congress of Mayors, reflecting concerns over significant traffic violations, particularly in cities like San José and Maragatos, prompting widespread support for stricter compliance mechanisms.
