As per reports, a nationwide strike by liberal medical practitioners in France is scheduled to take place from 05 January till 15 January following calls from all unions representing self-employed doctors.
• The mobilization is a response to several measures included in the draft Social Security budget adopted on 16 December, as well as to broader policy directions affecting the medical profession.
• A union representing young practitioners has launched an online platform to identify participating doctors, recording nearly 4,500 declarations of intent to strike within 24 hours of its launch.
• The initiative aims to improve visibility of liberal doctors’ participation, as current mechanisms do not formally capture strike data for self-employed medical professionals.
• The grievances cited by unions include proposed financial penalties for doctors who do not sufficiently contribute to the Shared Medical Record (Dossier Médical Partagé), provisions that would allow authorities to unilaterally reduce reimbursement rates for certain medical procedures without extended social dialogue, restrictions on the prescription of sick leave, and a legislative proposal under parliamentary review that could limit doctors’ freedom to choose their place of practice.
• Strike participation may take several forms and will not necessarily result in the complete closure of all medical practices. Planned actions include full cessation of consultations, reduced participation in hospital emergency rotations, and administrative actions such as the suspension of transmission of treatment forms to the national health insurance system.
