As per reports, the Government of Maharashtra has declared a paid holiday on Tuesday (02 December) for all workers, employees, and officers who are voters in areas where Nagar Parishad (municipal council) and Nagar Panchayat (town council) elections will be held.
The government resolution invokes provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, to justify the paid leave requirement. The details are as follows:
• This leave entitlement applies irrespective of whether the individual’s workplace is located within or outside the constituency.
• The directive is intended to enable all eligible citizens to vote, particularly in establishments where in prior polls workers were deprived of leave or time-off.
• Establishments under the Labour Department, including factories, shops, hotels, commercial and retail establishments, IT companies, and malls, are mandated to comply with the holiday. Alternatively, two to three hours of special leave can be provided for essential or continuous services where a full-day holiday is not feasible.
• Authorities have also warned that failure to grant leave or sufficient time-off will attract action if complaints are filed.
