The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Thursday (03 July) issued flood bulletins for Metro Manila and surrounding areas, warning of potential water level rise along key rivers and creeks due to persistent southwest monsoon rains intensified by a low-pressure area.
PAGASA also raised a yellow rainfall alert over Metro Manila, Bataan, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, Zambales, Pampanga, and parts of Batangas and Laguna, indicating rainfall between 7.5 mm to 15 mm. The details are as follows:
• As per PAGASA’s advisory, areas at risk of flooding due to rising water levels include Quezon City (San Juan, Pasig, Tullahan, and Upper Marikina rivers), Marikina City (Upper Marikina and Nangka rivers), Pasig City (Pasig River, Lower Marikina River, Buli Creek), Mandaluyong City (Lower Marikina and Pasig rivers), Manila City (San Juan and Pasig rivers), San Juan City (San Juan River), Makati City (Pasig River), Caloocan City, Malabon City, Navotas City, and Valenzuela City (Tullahan River), as well as parts of Rizal Province including Antipolo (Upper Marikina and Nangka rivers), Rodriguez (Upper Marikina and Mango rivers), San Mateo (Upper Marikina and Nangka rivers), Cainta (Cainta River and Buli Creek), and Taytay (Taytay River).
• In response, several cities across Metro Manila have announced class suspensions. PAGASA also forecasts that Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro could receive 50-100 mm of rainfall on Thursday (03 July) due to the southwest monsoon (Habagat).
• Additionally, areas in Northern Luzon, including Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, and Ilocos Norte, will also experience similar rainfall amounts, influenced by a low pressure area (LPA).
• The LPA was located 125 km east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, and is forecast to move northwestward toward Extreme Northern Luzon.
• The LPA combined with the southwest monsoon is expected to bring significant rainfall to Northern Luzon and the western sections of Central and Southern Luzon until Saturday (05 July). On Friday (04 July), heavy to intense rains are forecast in Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.
• PAGASA warns of continuing threats of flooding and landslides in flood-prone areas and mountainous terrain, respectively. Should the LPA develop into a tropical cyclone before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility, it will be given the local name Bising.
