As per reports, the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued an orange weather alert for rain and thunderstorms in Barcelona and surrounding coastal areas on Thursday (06 November).
• The alert indicates a high likelihood of intense rainfall and electrical activity during the morning hours, primarily between 0600 hours local time (0500 hours UTC) and 0900 hours local time (0800 hours UTC) when rainfall is expected to peak at approximately 18 liters per square meter in one hour.
• Thunderstorms are forecast in the morning, particularly along the Barcelona coast and nearby municipalities such as L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Sabadell.
• In nearby areas, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat is forecast to experience heavy rainfall early in the day, tapering off to lighter rainfall in the afternoon, with temperatures ranging between 14 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius.
• In Sabadell, intense downpours are also expected around 0900 hours local time (0800 hours UTC), followed by isolated storms later in the day, with temperatures ranging from 11 degrees Celsius to 17 degrees Celsius.
• Additonally, the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) has rpeortedly warned of torrential rainfall up to 40 liters per meter sqaure in 30 minutes and wind gusts reaching 60 kilometer per hour, mainly affecting coastal and pre-coastal areas from Terres de l’Ebre to Barcelona and Girona between early morning and midday.
• The Catalan Civil Protection has reportedly activated a level four alert, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from streams and flood-prone zones, and move vehicles from low-lying areas to prevent flood damage.
• Several universities including Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), and University of Girona (UdG) have rpeortedly suspended classes and academic activities on Thursday (06 November) due to safety concerns and have recommended teleworking where possible.
