As per reports, Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators in Kenya announced an immediate 50 percent increase in public transport fares and a nationwide transport strike beginning Monday (18 May) following recent fuel price increases announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
• EPRA increased petrol prices by Ksh16.65 per litre and diesel prices by Ksh46.29 per litre, while kerosene prices remained unchanged.
• PSV operators stated that rising fuel costs significantly increased operational expenses and reduced profitability across transport operations.
• Matatu operators announced that revised fare prices would take immediate effect across Nairobi and other major towns nationwide.
• Representatives from the transport sector further announced plans for a nationwide PSV strike beginning Monday (18 May), with threats of widespread road blockades until authorities address concerns regarding fuel prices.
• Transport operators indicated that public transport movement may be severely disrupted across multiple urban and intercity routes during the planned industrial action.
• Authorities stated that ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East contributed to increased global oil prices affecting domestic fuel markets.
