As per reports, on Friday (01 August), widespread protests are scheduled across major Brazilian cities in response to the upcoming US tariff hike on Brazilian exports, which is now slated to take effect on Wednesday (06 August) following a decree by President Donald Trump.
• Organized by trade unions, the Popular Brazil and People Without Fear fronts, and other social movements, the demonstrations aim to denounce what protestors call a violation of Brazilian sovereignty and an aggressive, politically-motivated trade measure.
• The CUT has publicly condemned the tariff measure, describing it as a political aggression and an infringement on Brazil’s sovereignty, particularly criticising the inclusion of political motivations in tariff decisions.
• The sectors anticipated to be most immediately impacted by the tariff escalation include timber and pig iron production, both of which are primarily oriented towards the US export market.
• Demonstrations have been confirmed in the following locations on Friday (01 August): São Paulo at 1000 hours (local time) at the US Consulate, Brasília at 0900 hours (local time) in front of the US Embassy, Rio de Janeiro at 1800 hours (local time) in front of US Consulate, Salvador at 1500 hours (local time), Porto Alegre at 1800 hours (local time) at Esquina Democrática, Belo Horizonte at 1700 hours (local time) at Praça Sete, Manaus at 1600 hours (local time) at Praça da Polícia/Palacete Provincial, Recife at 1530 hours (local time) at Praça do Derby, Florianópolis at 1930 hours (local time) at Praça da Alfândega, and Campo Grande.
