Risk level: Low Country: Turkey

As per reports, journalists’ organisations across Türkiye are scheduled to hold simultaneous demonstrations and press conferences on Saturday (24 October) to protest against censorship, the detention of journalists and restrictions on media organisations and digital platforms.

• The demonstrations are scheduled to begin at 1400 hours local time (1100 hours UTC) in multiple cities, including Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Eskişehir, Antalya, Adana, Kocaeli, Van and Diyarbakır.
• The mobilisation marks the first anniversary of the appointment of a trustee to the television channel TELE 01 and is being organised under the slogan ‘No to censorship, freedom of the news’.
• The protests have received support from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ). On Monday (19 October) and Tuesday (20 October), the IFJ Executive Committee unanimously passed a motion expressing solidarity with Turkish journalists and their professional organisations and supporting the nationwide mobilisation.
• The mobilisation follows concerns over the detention and prosecution of journalists, the appointment of trustees to media organisations, restrictions on news websites and the blocking of journalists’ social media accounts. Press organisations have also criticised the seizure of Halk TV and restrictions affecting media outlets and digital platforms.
