Multiple traffic accidents prompt partial road closures and severe congestion along Simon Bolivar Avenue in Quito on Tuesday (09 June)

As per reports, the Agencia Metropolitana de Transito (AMT) has announced partial lane closures and significant vehicular congestion along multiple sectors of Simon Bolivar Avenue on Tuesday (09 June) due to consecutive traffic accidents.

• The traffic emergencies developed during the morning hours following intense rainfall and heavy fog accumulation across the metropolitan district.
• One of the first reported incidents occurred in the Tababela sector, near the Alpachaca Connector at 0614 hours local time (1114 hours UTC), according to preliminary reports, a vehicle lost control while driving on Simón Bolívar Avenue and ended up crashing into a pole in the vicinity of a hotel.
• As a security measure, the authorities restricted traffic in one of the lanes in the direction of the Mariscal Sucre International Airport while assistance work was carried out.
• Minutes later, a second accident was recorded in the Guápulo sector, three vehicles were involved in the incident, and one of them ended up overturned on the road, generating significant complications for those who were traveling in a north-south direction.
• The situation was further complicated by a third accident reported in the Loma de Puengasí sector. Due to this new event, the authorities applied temporary restrictions in one of the lanes to allow emergency attention and guarantee the safety of users.
• The coincidence of the three incidents at different points on the same avenue caused simultaneous damage to one of the main routes in and out of the capital.
• Municipal transit authorities have not announced any total road closures, but significant delays are reported along all interconnected central access ramps.
