As per reports, German authorities have announced weekend motorway closures affecting key transport corridors in North Rhine-Westphalia from 2100 hours local time (1900 hours UTC) on Friday (03 July) until 0500 hours local time (0300 hours UTC) on Monday (06 July) due to planned infrastructure works.
• The A2 motorway will be fully closed between the Kamener Kreuz interchange and the Hamm junction in the direction of Hanover to facilitate the installation of noise-reducing asphalt. Long-distance traffic will be diverted via the A31 and A30, while alternative routes include the A1, A44, and A33. Local traffic will be diverted via the A1 to the Kamen interchange and then along the U67 diversion through Bönen.
• During the same period, the A1/A61 motorway will be completely closed between the Erftstadt interchange and the Bliesheim motorway junction near Cologne to allow the installation of bridge superstructure components as part of the Merowingerstraße replacement project. Officially signposted diversion routes will be in place.
• The closures coincide with the start of school holidays in several German states, including Saxony, Thuringia, Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony, and Bremen, and ongoing holidays in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland, increasing the likelihood of elevated traffic volumes across the region.
