As per reports, the Union of Metalworkers of Attica and the Shipbuilding Industry of Greece, together with the Union of Wood Processing and Shipbuilders, announced a rally outside the Ministry of Labor in Athens on Wednesday (27 May) at 1600 hours local time (1300 hours UTC).
• Reports indicate that the mobilization is being organized to demand mandatory implementation of a Collective Labor Agreement, improved workplace safety measures, and better working conditions within the shipbuilding and ship repair sectors.
• Organizers stated that workers are protesting against what they describe as increasing workplace accidents and unsafe working environments across shipyards, workshops, construction sites, and ships.
• The unions further alleged that insufficient health and safety enforcement, lack of workplace inspections, and inadequate protective measures have contributed to a rise in incidents including falls, burns, electric shocks, and exhaustion-related injuries.
• Reports suggest that demonstrators are also calling for stronger labor inspections, employer-provided personal protective equipment, and immediate suspension of work in cases involving imminent danger.
• Organizers additionally criticized taxation policies and rising living costs, while accusing authorities of failing to adequately protect workers’ economic conditions.
• Reports indicate that the rally is expected to receive support from other labor groups, including unions representing construction, energy, and food and tourism sector workers.
