Mass shooting incident reported at school in Songkhla, Thailand on Wednesday (11 February); at least three injured

As per reports, a mass shooting incident occurred at a school-cum-daycare in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district on Wednesday (11 February) evening, where several teachers and students held hostage.

Following are the details:

• The Mae Taptim Yala Foundation reported on its Facebook page at 1659 hours (local time) that Patong Prathan Khiriwat School in Patong was stormed by armed gunmen, who opened fire. The foundation said that police were dispatched to surround the school.
• It is currently being indicated that the shooting was carried out by a lone gunman, who was formerly a police officer. The motive remains unknown.
• At least one teacher was shot in the incident and taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, varying reports have indicated that at least three people were injured. A confirmation of casualty and fatality figures is yet to be officially declared.
• At least 34 people, including 22 students were taken hostage in the building. Local police, administrative personnel, and others convened at the site for negotiations with the gunman.
• At present, it is indicated that the gunman has been taken into custody. However, further details are awaited.
