The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred at about 0515 hours (local time) on Tuesday (20 January). The earthquake was located approximately 113 kilometres northeast of Maluku Selatan.

The earthquake has been recorded at a depth of 180 kilometres.
