Magh Mela scheduled in Prayagraj till Sunday (15 February); possible traffic diversion announced

As per reports, the Magh Mela (44-day annual Hindu pilgrimage) will be held in Prayagraj till Sunday (15 February). During the festival period, large numbers of devotees are expected to participate in ritual bathing at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

Local authorities are likely to observe the following traffic diversion during the major bathing dates, which will include Makar Sankranti on Wednesday (14 January), Mauni Amavasya on Sunday (18 January), Basant Panchami on Friday (23 January), Maghi Purnima on Sunday (01 February) and Mahashivratri on Sunday (15 February):

• Vehicles approaching from Kanpur towards Prayagraj will be diverted at Kokhraj in Kaushambi district onto the bypass, allowing them to proceed directly via Handia to Varanasi.
• vehicles coming from Varanasi towards Kanpur will be routed through the Handia bypass to Kokhraj before heading to Kanpur.
• Traffic moving from Kanpur to Banda via Prayagraj, vehicles will be diverted from Chaudagra in Fatehpur, proceeding through Bindki, Bandhwa Tiraha, Lalouli and Chilla towards Banda, with return traffic following the same route.
• Vehicles travelling from Kanpur to Mirzapur will be routed through Chaudagra, Bindki, Bandhwa Tiraha, Lalouli and Chilla to Banda, then onward via Keen-Mau, Shankargarh, Naribari, Khiri and Koraon to Mirzapur.
• Vehicles heading from Kanpur to Rewa will be diverted through Ghatampur, Hamirpur Road, Banda, Karvi, Shankargarh and Naribari while heavy vehicles travelling from Kanpur to Aurai and Mirzapur will be sent via the Kokhraj bypass, Handia and Aurai, turning right at Chilh towards Mirzapur.
• Traffic from Rewa to Varanasi via Prayagraj will instead be routed from the Mangawan police station area through Hanumana and Mirzapur, while vehicles moving from Rewa to Lucknow will travel via Naribari, Shankargarh, Mau, Karvi, Banda, Chilla Bridge, Bindki, Fatehpur, Lalganj, Rae Bareli, and onward to Lucknow.
• Heavy vehicles travelling from Rae Bareli to Varanasi via Prayagraj will be diverted through Lalganj, Bhupiyamau Chauraha, Raniganj, Mungra Badshahpur and Jaunpur.
• Under the inter-district diversion plan, all vehicles except those related to the Magh Mela will be diverted before entering Prayagraj. Vehicles bound for Varanasi without entering Prayagraj will use the Kaushambi–Kokhraj–Nawabganj–Soraon–Handia–Aurai bypass route, with return traffic following the same route.
• Parking zones have been establiesh around the Triveni Sangam. Vehicles for essential services, including ambulances, will be exempted from these restrictions.
