As per reports, on Friday (24 October), Lithuania temporarily closed its border with Belarus and suspended operations at Vilnius and Kaunas airports due to multiple weather balloons entering Lithuanian airspace. Air traffic at both airports is expected to remain closed until 0200 hours local time on Saturday (25 October).

The State Border Guard Service closed the Salcininkai and Medininkai checkpoints with Belarus until 1200 hours local time on Saturday (25 October). Authorities indicated that the balloons were part of repeated smuggling attempts from Belarus, including the transport of contraband cigarettes.

• Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė announced that security officials will evaluate short-term measures to deter smugglers and press the Belarusian authorities. This is the third balloon incursion this month, resulting in airport closures and flight disruptions.
