Landslide reported along NH-10 on Saturday (30 August); IMD issues multiple heavy rainfall alerts across West Bengal until Wednesday (03 September)

As per reports, on Saturday (30 August), a massive landslide that occurred during the night of Friday (29 August) between Sewak Bagh Bridge (Coronation Bridge) and Kalijhora on National Highway 10 has cut off the vital link between Bengal and Sikkim.

• Huge boulders rolled down from the hillside, blocking NH-10 and severing Bengal-Sikkim connectivity since Friday (29 August). Multiple cars and tourists were stranded on the highway.
• National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) teams reached the spot at night hours of Friday (29 August) and began clearance operations from Saturday (30 August). However, due to the large debris, authorities were unable to confirm when the highway would reopen.
• Local administration advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and refrain from entering landslide-prone stretches until further notice.
• On Saturday (30 August), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls in Jalpaiguri district.
• Furthermore, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall was issued for Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, Kalimpong, and Darjeeling districts, while the remaining districts were forecast with yellow alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls on Saturday (30 August).
• However, according to the IMD nowcast issued at 1500 hours and valid until 1800 hours on Saturday (30 August), yellow alerts for rainfall were maintained across all districts of West Bengal.
• On Sunday (31 August), a yellow alert for heavy rainfall persisted in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts.
• On Monday (01 September), no weather alerts were issued for any West Bengal districts.
• On Tuesday (02 September), yellow alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls were issued in Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, Hubli, and Nadia districts.
• On Wednesday (03 September), yellow alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls were issued in South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, Paschim Bardhaman, Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Nadia, Murshidabad, and Birbhum districts.
