As per reports, Kerala Health Minister K. Muraleedharan on Sunday (07 June) announced enhanced public health measures in response to reported Shigella infections in the state and ongoing concerns regarding Ebola outbreaks in parts of Africa. Following this, the state has directed the Food Safety Department to conduct strict inspections of hotels, restaurants, and local food establishments following reports of Shigella cases, after a four-year-old child died of Shigella infection in Kozhikode, marking the first reported fatality from the disease in the state.
Separately, a traveler recently arriving from Uganda has also been placed under precautionary quarantine in Kerala, and has designated four medical colleges with isolation facilities to manage any suspected Ebola cases. Officials further emphasized that no Ebola cases have been confirmed in India, and the quarantine measures are precautionary in nature.
