The Kazhydromet has forecast multiple weather hazards across Kazakhstan on Wednesday (18 February), including rain and snow, ground blizzards, fog, icy conditions, and strong winds, with impacts expected to vary by oblast and localised urban areas.
• Precipitation, blizzards, and icing are expected in Pavlodar Region (west and north), with Pavlodar forecast to see rain and snow, ground blizzards, and ice during the morning and afternoon. Similar wintry precipitation and blizzard conditions are expected across Kostanay Region, including Kostanay, with fog also forecast in parts of the oblast. Aktobe Region is forecast to experience rain and snow, ice, and snowstorm activity, with fog in parts of the south and east, while North Kazakhstan Region is expected to see rain and snow, blizzard conditions, black ice, and fog, including Petropavlovsk. Akmola Region is expected to see precipitation overnight and through the afternoon, with icy conditions, ground-level snowstorm risk, and fog, including Kokshetau, while Astana is forecast to see light precipitation overnight, followed by rain and snow during the day, alongside ice and snow showers.
• Fog and icy conditions are expected across several western and southern regions, including Atyrau Region (west, south, and east), with Atyrau forecast to experience fog and ice at night and in the morning. Mangystau Region is forecast to see fog across the west, north, and central areas, including Aktau, while West Kazakhstan Region is expected to see fog and ice, including Uralsk. Kyzylorda Region is forecast to see fog across central, northern, and southern parts, including Kyzylorda, with winds strengthening during the day.
• Strong winds are expected across multiple regions, with the highest gust potential noted in areas experiencing precipitation and blizzard conditions. Pavlodar Region is forecast to see southwesterly winds of 15 to 20 meters per second, with higher gusts of 23 to 28 meters per second in parts of the oblast. Wind gusts of similar intensity are also forecast in parts of North Kazakhstan Region and Akmola Region, while Abay Region is forecast to see southerly to southwesterly winds with gusts up to 23 meters per second.
• Karaganda Region and Ulytau Region are forecast to experience precipitation and ground blizzards in some areas, with fog and ice also expected, alongside gusty winds. Turkestan Region is forecast to see fog across multiple areas including mountainous zones, with stronger winds in mountain passes, while Shymkent and Turkestan are expected to see fog overnight and in the morning. Zhambyl Region, including Taraz, is forecast to experience fog at times, with stronger winds in mountainous areas. Zhetisu Region is forecast to see fog in mountainous areas overnight and in the morning, with stronger winds possible near the Alakol lakes. Almaty Region, including Konayev, is forecast to experience shifting winds with gusts around 15 to 20 meters per second.
