The Kazhydromet has issued a regional weather forecast highlighting widespread winter weather impacts across multiple regions of Kazakhstan on Thursday (22 January). The forecast indicates the occurrence of snow, blizzards, fog, icy conditions, strong winds, and severe frost, driven by persistent cold air masses and unstable winter conditions affecting much of the country.

• Snow is expected overnight in North Kazakhstan Region, with snowfall continuing during the day across western, southern, and eastern parts of the region. Snow and daytime blizzard conditions are forecast for northern parts of Pavlodar Region. Akmola Region is expected to experience snow and snowstorms overnight in western and northern areas, extending to western, northern, and eastern parts during the day. Snow and ground blizzards are forecast across northern, eastern, and southern areas of Kostanay Region. Kostanay city is also expected to experience snow and ground blizzards.
• Icy conditions are expected in southern and mountainous areas of Turkestan Region, with fog affecting western, northern, southern, and mountainous areas. In Shymkent, icy conditions are expected during the day with intermittent fog, while Turkestan city is expected to experience fog at times.
• Fog and icy conditions are expected across northern and southern parts of Atyrau Region. Fog is forecast in the northeastern part of Mangystau Region. Fog is also expected in southern parts of Abai Region, northern and eastern parts of East Kazakhstan Region, mountainous areas of Zhetisu Region, Zhambyl Region, southern parts of Kyzylorda Region, and in Ust-Kamenogorsk.
• Severe frost is expected overnight in several eastern regions. In Mangystau Region, nighttime temperatures in the northeast are expected to fall to around minus 22 degrees Celsius. In Abai Region and East Kazakhstan Region, severe frost of up to minus 40 degrees Celsius is expected overnight. In Zhetisu Region, nighttime temperatures are expected to fall to minus 25 to minus 27 degrees Celsius.
• Strong winds are expected across several regions. In Mangystau Region, easterly to northeasterly winds are forecast, with gusts of 15 to 20 metres per second overnight in the northwest. In Akmola Region, southwesterly winds are expected in the afternoon with gusts reaching 15 to 20 metres per second across western, southern, and eastern areas. In Abai Region, easterly to southeasterly winds are forecast, with gusts of 15 to 20 metres per second across central areas and up to 25 metres per second in Zharminsky District. In East Kazakhstan Region, easterly to southeasterly winds are expected in the southeast during the afternoon with gusts of 15 to 20 metres per second. In Zhetisu Region, northeasterly winds are forecast with gusts of 15 to 20 metres per second, occasionally reaching 23 to 28 metres per second near the Alakol Lakes.
