As per reports, an indefinite strike by delivery drivers (motorizados) associated with the PedidosYa platform is ongoing in Panama City and other provinces, including Panama Oeste, Chiriquí, Coclé, Herrera, and Colón, as of Friday (17 April).
• The strike, which commenced on Monday (13 April), is in protest of a new payment model based on mileage that has reportedly led to a 20 to 40 percent reduction in driver earnings.
• Reports indicate that approximately 97 to 98 percent of the 4,000 active delivery drivers have suspended operations, leading to significant disruptions for over 3,500 affiliated businesses. Drivers have concentrated in areas such as Calle 74 in San Francisco, Panama City, to voice their demands for a return to a fixed-fee-per-order system and a minimum base rate of USD 3.00.
• The disruption coincides with scheduled fuel price increases on Friday (17 April), which drivers claim further exacerbates the unsustainability of the current earnings model. While the strike is currently peaceful, the high level of participation has paralyzed delivery services across major urban centers.
