As per reports, as of Sunday (19 January), the road between Kilpisjärvi, Finland’s northwestern arm, and Norway, including Route 21 in the Enontekiö municipality, was closed indefinitely due to hazardous conditions reported in both directions. The Finnish Road Traffic Centre announced the closure on Saturday (18 January), citing poor driving conditions in Norway caused by extremely icy surfaces resulting from mild temperatures and rain.
According to the forecast from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), mild temperatures are expected to persist, with northern Finland anticipating snowfall and temperatures ranging from 0 degrees Celsius to -10 degrees Celsius. Winds are forecasted to be moderate to strong, particularly in northern and eastern regions, with gusts reaching up to 20 meters per second as of Sunday (19 January).
