According to reports, the Meteorology Department has stated that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts on Sunday (18 August).
• Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.
• Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central and North-western provinces.
• Additionally, the National Building and Research Organisation (NBRO) issued a ‘Level-3’ (Red / Evacuation) landslide early warning for multiple areas in two districts, as heavy rainfall continued on Saturday evening (17 August). The warning has been issued for different divisional secretariat divisions (DSDs) in the Kalutara (Ingirya and Bulathsinhala and surrounding areas) and Ratnapura (lapatha, Eheliyagoda and Kalawana DSDs and surrounding areas) districts.
• The advisory further stated that, since rainfall in the aforementioned areas within the past 24 hours exceeded 150mm, if the rainfall continues, residents should evacuate to a safe location to avoid the risk of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures, and ground subsidence.
