As per reports, the National System Operator announced on Sunday (18 October) that the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai will remain disconnected from the national grid for several days following a nationwide power failure on Saturday (17 October).
Following are the details:
• The nationwide blackout occurred due to transmission network instability triggered by the sudden disconnection of a generating unit, causing a complete system collapse.
• Power was progressively restored to major hospitals, water treatment plants, airports, and grid substations between 1211 hours and 1700 hours (local time) on Saturday (17 October) via hydropower facilities and distribution feeders.
• All three units at the Norochcholai coal power plant were shut down under standard safety protocols, temporarily removing 810 megawatts of generating capacity from the national grid.
• The National System Operator and Energy Ministry have initiated an internal investigation to determine the precise sequence of events and cause of the system collapse, including potential links to a prior operational failure at Kotmale power plant.
