As per reports, heavy and sustained rainfall has resulted in flash floods and landslides across the Northeast Region of India. The following are the details of the situation as of Saturday (31 May):
• Arunachal Pradesh: On Friday (30 May), seven people were killed when their vehicles were swept off the road due to a landslide on the Bana-Seppa stretch of National Highway 13 in East Kameng district. On Thursday (29 May), a landslide struck a farm near Pine Groove area along the Ziro-Kamle Road In Lower Subansiri district. Two people were killed and two others were rescued.
• Mizoram: On late friday night, a landslide struck Chanmary, the commercial hub of Lawngtlai town, resulting in collapse of a few buildings. At least eight people are said to be trapped and rescue efforts are underway, hampered by the rain and limited equipment. Two injured people have been rescued and there are reports of trapped Myanmarese refugees. The National Highway 54 is blocked due to the landslide, cutting off Lawntlai from Siaha.
• Assam: In Guwahati, five deaths were reported due to three separate landslides in Bonda, Datalpara and Maligaon. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have impacted the five districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Kamrup Metro and Cachar. Urban flooding has prompted large-scale evacuations by NDRF and SDRF teams.
• Manipur: Following the incessant rainfall in the past few days, the water levels of Nambul, Iril and Nambol rivers are flowing at warning levels. Authorities are on high alert as the Imphal river has crossed the high flood level. Many localities of Imphal East district were flooded due to the overflow.Many families residing along the Senapati river bank, including Viewland Colony in Senapati district headquarters, were also evacuated to safer places due to flooding.
• Tripura: According to State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reports, a person drowned in Jirania, and more than 200 people were rendered homeless after heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms hit Tripura over the last two days. At least 106 houses were damaged, and around 207 people from 57 families took refuge in four relief camps. Roads in Longtrai Valley in Dhalai district, Jirania and Mohanpur in West Tripura district, Jampuijala in Sepahijala district, and parts of Gomati and South Tripura districts were blocked due to fallen trees.
• Sikkim: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sikkim, and warned of possible floods and landslides in Mangan, Gyalshing, and Soreng districts. The District Magistrate of Gangtok issued an urgent public notice stating that general public should not panic and concerned authorities will provide timely updates. The administration highlighted that the red alert for Mangan District could impact the Teesta River belt from Dikchu to Singtam, located within Gangtok district, especially in case of a flood-like situation in North Sikkim.
