As per reports, on 12 October the Mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, together with the director of the Urban Development Institute (IDU), Orlando Molano, announced a controlled demolition through implosion of the vehicular bridges at the intersection of Las Américas Avenue, 13th Street, Sixth Street, and 50th Avenue in the town of Puente Aranda.
• The procedure involves more than 4,550 drilled perforations in the overpass decks and 35 columns, where industrial gel (induGel) will be installed for controlled detonation.
• The implosion will last a maximum of 12 seconds, after which material removal is expected to take approximately two months.
• The 7,900 cubic meters of construction and demolition waste will be reused in the project. Environmental protection measures include relocating 178 trees and managing the relocation or repelling of wildlife prior to the implosion.
• A comprehensive Traffic Management Plan (PMT) is expected to be implemented from 11 October at 2330 hours local time (0400 hours UTC 12 October) till 14 October at 0400 hours local time (0900 hours UTC) with closures on Las Américas Avenue, 13th Street, Sixth Street, Carrera 50, and associated cycle paths.
• Detours for private vehicles and TransMilenio buses have reportedly been defined to maintain mobility during the closures. Three safety rings have been established around the implosion site: 50 meters for no access due to risk of fragments, 100 meters for full evacuation of people and vehicles, and 150 meters for authorized personnel and emergency crews only.
