As per reports, the metropolitan areas of Greater Paris, Lyon, Montpellier, and Grenoble will enforce Low Emission Zone (ZFE) restrictions on vehicles with a Crit’Air 3 sticker, significantly limiting their circulation from Wednesday (01 January 2025).
• Paris and Lyon will implement these measures immediately, citing poor air quality, while Montpellier and Grenoble will adopt the restrictions proactively. These measures, mandated under the 2019 Mobility Orientation Law and reinforced by the 2021 Climate Law, aim to improve air quality by encouraging the use of hybrid or electric vehicles and promoting public or soft transportation modes.
• In Greater Paris alone, around 422,000 private vehicles and 59,000 professional vehicles will be affected, although a one-year tolerance period will delay fines until January 2026 when enforcement radars are operational. Exemptions have been granted to groups such as individuals with disabilities and workers with staggered hours.
• As of now, twelve French urban areas, including Aix-Marseille-Provence, Nice, and Toulouse, have implemented ZFE restrictions, with bans targeting older, higher-polluting vehicles. While some cities, like Strasbourg, have delayed extending restrictions due to improved air quality and investments in alternative transport, Paris and Lyon remain firm in their enforcement timeline.
