The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the district of Mumbai City on Saturday (16 August). A red alert is also currently active for Thane and Raigad.
• Two persons were killed, and as many others sustained injuries in a landslip amid heavy rainsfallin the eastern suburb of Vikhroli, in Mumbai on Saturday (16 August). The incident took place around 0239 hours at Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite.
• Major airlines, including IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa airlines, issued a travel advisory on Saturday (16 August) urging passengers to reach the airport well in advance. The airlines advised travellers to check their flight status on the official website. SpiceJet warned that all departures, arrivals, and connecting flights could be affected due to adverse weather conditions in Mumbai. While Akasa Air cited heavy rainfall in parts of Mumbai, Go, and Pune, leading to traffic congestion.
• An orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued in Mumbai for Sunday-Monday (17-18 August).
• Mahim station on the Western line of Mumbai’s suburban railway network faced severe disruption its tracks became heavily waterlogged due to incessant rainfall on Saturday (16 August), causing significant inconvenience to commuters.
• The Mumbai Traffic Police stated that traffic was affected at several key points. The tunnel from Mankhurd T Junction to Maharashtra Nagar was closed, and the railway tracks at Sion and Bandra stations were also affected by waterlogging.
• Heavy waterlogging across several parts of Mumbai led to traffic snarls and disrupted bus services. A spokesperson from Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) confirmed that bus operations were affected, with several routes diverted from waterlogged areas such as Sion, Kings Circle, Aarey Colony, and Malad Subway. Traffic movement was notably slow. Mumbai Traffic Police stated that one to one-and-a-half feet of water accumulation at Kane Nagar Bus Stand and MGR Chowk in Antop Hill caused a traffic congestion in the city.
