As per reports, on Monday (10 November), Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) has reportedly issued its first-ever Human Rights Alert for Croatia in its 17 years of operation, citing a deterioration in political and cultural freedoms across the country.
• The organization reportedly warns that numerous individuals and civil groups, including artists, journalists, teachers, and activists, now face intimidation, threats, and violence that hinder free expression.
• Documented incidents include the cancellation of cultural events, public hate speech, and mob attacks on gatherings, particularly those involving minority or liberal communities.
• The YIHR specifically criticizes the lack of consistent law enforcement response to extremist acts, including the repeated public use of the unconstitutional slogan ‘Za dom spremni’ (For the Homeland, Ready).
• It accuses authorities of tolerating pro-fascist and violent behavior linked to supporters of the Homeland Movement (Domovinski Pokret) and similar extremist groups.
• The organization has reportedly sent its warning to multiple Croatian institutions, including the President (Zoran Milanović), Prime Minister (Andrej Plenković), and Minister of the Interior (Davor Božinović) as well as to foreign embassies, the European Commission, and the Council of Europe.
• The warning urges the restoration of constitutional order and guarantees of freedom of expression through an active response by security and intelligence agencies. It calls for criminal prosecution of illegal acts, the equal application of laws, and constitutional proceedings to ban the Homeland Movement party due to its alleged unconstitutional activities.
