As per reports, in the wake of the recent unrest in Bishramganj, bus drivers have suspended services along the Agartala-Sonamura route on Wednesday (06 August), demanding a fair and transparent investigation into the incident on Tuesday (05 August). Following are the details:
• On Tuesday (05 August), a woman was reportedly assaulted and molested aboard a bus in Bishramganj. The bus was later intercepted at Bishramganj Bazaar by a group of miscreants who physically assaulted staff and several passengers, and damaged the bus with stones.
• The assault was allegedly carried out by Tipra Motha-backed miscreants. Another bus was also attacked at the Bishramganj Motor Stand in Sepahijala District, while a private vehicle was also attacked at Bagma.
• In response to the unrest at Bishramaganj, authorities had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning (05-06 August).
• The bus drivers have stated that none of the bus staff were involved in the reported molestation incident; however, bus staff were indiscriminately attacked in the ensuing unrest. Drivers from Sonamura have warned of an indefinite strike if authorities fail to guarantee their safety.
• Meanwhile, the Tipra Motha submitted a memorandum at the Bishramganj Police Station on Wednesday (06 August), demanding justice for the molestation victim.
