The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across northern Vietnam, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An on Thursday (17 September). A Level 1 natural disaster risk warning has been issued for heavy rain, tornadoes, lightning and hail.
The following weather conditions are expected:
• Northern Vietnam, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An: From early morning through Thursday night (17 September), Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and southern Phu Tho are expected to receive 40–80 mm of rainfall, with localised amounts exceeding 130 mm. Hanoi is expected to receive 30–60 mm, locally exceeding 90 mm. Rain is also forecast in southern parts of Lao Cai, Son La, Tuyen Quang and Thai Nguyen; northern Phu Tho; and Bac Ninh. Rainfall exceeding 100 mm within three hours is possible.
• Other northern areas and Ha Tinh to Quang Tri: Showers and thunderstorms are expected during the day and night, with rainfall of 15–30 mm, locally exceeding 70 mm.
• Hue City to Lam Dong and southern Vietnam: Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected during the late afternoon and evening, with rainfall of 10–30 mm, locally exceeding 60 mm. Ho Chi Minh City is also expected to experience rain.
• Associated hazards and outlook: Thunderstorms may be accompanied by tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong wind gusts. Heavy rainfall across northern Vietnam, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An is expected to decrease from Friday (18 September).
