As per reports, heavy rainfall was reported across Chennai, accompanied by strong wind conditions on Thursday (18 June). The affected areas included Egmore, Purasaivakkam, Chennai Central, Nungambakkam, Teynampet, OMR corridor and surrounding areas, including Taramani, Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery, Madipakkam, Adyar, as well as in suburban localities, including Tambaram, Pallavaram, Chromepet, Vandalur, Kilambakkam, and Selaiyur.
In addition, flight operations at Chennai International Airport were reportedly disrupted at around 1600 hours (local time) following heavy rainfall in the city.
• Following this, more than 10 inbound flights, including services arriving from Salem, Coimbatore, and Kolkata, were reportedly unable to land as scheduled and were instructed to remain in holding patterns until weather conditions improved. Simultaneously, departures from Chennai experienced delays, with more than 20 flights reportedly affected by weather-related operational constraints.
• As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls has been issued in the forecast for Chennai.
• As per the IMD Nowcast issued at 1615 hours and valid till 1900 hours (local time) on Thursday (18 June), an orange alert for moderate thunderstorms with maximum surface wind speed between 41 and 61 km/h and heavy rainfall of more than 15 mm/h has been activated for Chennai.
