As per reports, severe gridlock and prolonged travel delays are ongoing along the Benin-Asaba Highway on Wednesday (09 September). The latest report was published at 0400 hours local time (0300 hours UTC), with some travellers reportedly spending up to three days on journeys that normally take a few hours.
• Reports indicate that long vehicle queues are affecting sections around the Benin Bypass and Benin-Agbor axis in Edo State. Heavy rainfall, deteriorated carriageways, deep potholes and increased movement of articulated trucks have been identified as contributing factors.
• Reports indicate that significant congestion is affecting the Issele-Uku, Ubulu-Okiti and Onicha-Ugbo areas in Delta State, leaving motorists stranded for several hours and, in some cases, overnight.
• Reports indicate that motorists at Ezenei Junction in Asaba are using one side of the expressway because the other side has deteriorated significantly, with deep potholes containing rainwater.
• Reports indicate that concealed potholes, particularly during heavy rainfall, have contributed to vehicle damage and increased accident risk along affected sections.
• The Federal Controller of Works in Edo State, Engr. Babatunde Tajudeen, stated that the Federal Ministry of Works is considering an alternative contractor to restore the highway and ease the disruption. The existing concession has not been formally terminated.
• Reports indicate that the 125-kilometre highway runs from Ring Road Roundabout in Benin City to Summit Junction in Asaba and is an important road link between the South-East, South-South and parts of the South-West.
