As per reports, Hungary is recording an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), a highly contagious viral infection affecting livestock and wildlife, as of Tuesday (01 April).
• The disease was first detected in Kisbajcs and later confirmed in Levél, both in Győr-Moson-Sopron County near the Slovak border.
• Authorities have implemented strict containment measures, including the culling of approximately 3000 animals in Levél and within a 10-kilometer radius of affected areas.
• Vaccination campaigns are underway, but experts warn of limited protection, as vaccines primarily prevent clinical symptoms rather than halting infection.
• The outbreak poses a risk of transmission to wild animals, complicating eradication efforts.
• Thousands of slaughtered farm animals are set to be buried near Hungary’s border with Austria after the outbreak in the town of Levél. It was ordered to prevent the disease from spreading, and may take up to ten days before all the cattle is slaughtered.
