The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board issued an advisory on Friday (19 June) warning that persistent heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next few days may cause temporary flooding in low-lying areas adjacent to rivers across the northern and northeastern regions of the country.
Following are the details:
• Intense weather patterns that brought severe thunderstorms across the region on Thursday (18 June), has resulted in at least five fatalities and one individual missing due to lightning strikes across the Sylhet and Netrokona districts.
• The meteorological agency indicates that upstream water inflows combined with local heavy downpours are driving up water levels in major regional river basins. Low-lying villages, agricultural floodplains, and riverbank settlements in northern and northeastern districts are at immediate risk of seasonal inundation if high-intensity rainfall persists into the weekend.
• As on Thursday (18 June) at 1500 hours (local time), the Rupsa river in Khulna, the Kushiyara river in Fenchuganj and the Sameswari river in Kalmakanda were just below danger levels. The Pashure River in Mangla is above the danger level and may have already begun flooding nearby areas.
