As per reports, the reopening of the First Niger Bridge linking Onitsha in Anambra State with Asaba in Delta State has been delayed by one week due to persistent rainfall affecting ongoing rehabilitation works.
• The bridge is now expected to reopen on Monday (28 September), subject to favourable weather conditions and completion of the works.
• Reports indicate that the bridge was closed on 07 September for emergency maintenance, including replacement of vandalised railings, bolts and nuts, sections of expansion-joint steelwork and stanchion/steel-truss components.
• The Acting Federal Controller of Works for Anambra State, Timothy Emenike, stated that persistent heavy rainfall had affected some completed sections and disrupted construction activities.
• Motorists and commuters have been directed to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi and the Onitsha-Owerri Road as alternative routes pending completion of the works.
